DUMBO

Heritage District · Brooklyn, New York

Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass — a few blocks of nineteenth-century warehouses between the two bridges on the Brooklyn waterfront, ⚠ NAMED IN THE 1970s BY RESIDENTS WHO WANTED AN UGLY ACRONYM to deter developers. It did not work. The cobbled streets, the cast-iron and brick lofts and the view up Washington Street have made it one of the most photographed neighbourhoods on earth.

Washington Street at Water Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11201, United States

An open neighbourhood — free, no gate, no hours. The Washington Street view, the Manhattan Bridge Archway and the EMPIRE STORES PUBLIC ROOFTOP are all free at all times. Shops, galleries and restaurants keep their own hours. ⚠ THE FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPH FRAMES THE MANHATTAN BRIDGE, NOT THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE. ⚠ Go before 8 a.m. for it; from mid-morning the spot is a permanent queue of photographers standing in a live road. ⚠ The cobbles are original Belgian block and are genuinely difficult underfoot.
