Dungeon Provincial Park
A Small Coastal Park Around A Huge Sea Cave, The Dungeon, A Collapsed Cavern Where The Sea Surges In And Out, With A Viewing Platform And Short Coastal Trail Near Cape Bonavista. A Quick Stop In The Bonavista Area With Dramatic Water Movement · Bonavista, Newfoundland and Labrador
Dungeon Provincial Park is a small coastal stop on the Bonavista Peninsula of Newfoundland, a few kilometres from Cape Bonavista and the town of Bonavista on the road toward Elliston (confirm the distances). It protects a collapsed sea cave known as the Dungeon, where the roof of a large cavern fell in and left a deep, open pit with a natural arch at the seaward end. Swells surge through the arch and pound the rock walls, throwing spray and a deep boom that carries over the headland. A short walkway and viewing platform let visitors look down on the pit from a safe distance, and a coastal trail along the cliff tops offers wide views of the Atlantic. There is no campground and no beach, so it is a quick stop of an hour or two, best paired with the Cape Bonavista lighthouse, the Elliston root cellars and the puffin colony nearby. Fog and wind are common, and icebergs may pass offshore in spring.

Dungeon is a day-use provincial park, with the parking area, washrooms and viewing platform normally open from about late May or June to early autumn, so confirm the exact dates with Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Parks before you go. Outside the season the platform and paths may be shut and gated, and the cliff tops are not safe to explore in winter ice. Day use follows daylight and there is no attendant at night. Fog, high wind and heavy swells can close the viewing area without notice, and storm surges make the pit hazardous (confirm).
