Dybbol Banke and Sonderborg Castle

The Battlefield Of 1864, Where Prussian Forces Stormed The Danish Redoubts A Founding Memory For Modern Denmark With The Dybbol Mill And History Centre, And Sonderborg Castle'S Museum Of The Borderland · Sonderborg, Region of Southern Denmark

Dybbol Banke is the low green hill just west of Sonderborg where, on 18 April 1864, Prussian troops stormed the Danish earthwork redoubts after weeks of heavy bombardment, and Denmark lost the war that cost it Schleswig and Holstein - roughly two-fifths of the kingdom. The defeat became a founding memory of modern Denmark: a small nation that turned inward, rebuilt itself and, after a plebiscite in 1920, won North Schleswig back. Today the hill carries the white Dybbol Mill, a national symbol, the grassed outlines of the old redoubts, dozens of Danish and German memorial stones and graves, and the History Centre, where a reconstructed redoubt, costumed guides and cannon demonstrations explain the siege. Three kilometres away, Sonderborg Castle on the harbour holds the regional museum of the borderland: 1864, the German years, reunion in 1920 and the Second World War. Together they make a full, moving day. The honest caveat: it is a long way from Copenhagen, and the History Centre is seasonal, so off season the hill is mostly memorials and wind.
