Dyreparken (Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park)
Norway'S Largest Combined Zoo And Amusement Park, With Kardemomme By (Cardamom Town) And Captain Sabertooth'S Pirate World; A Water Park In Summer · Kristiansand, Agder
Dyreparken, about 10 km east of Kristiansand along the E18 in southern Norway, opened in 1966 as a zoo and has grown into Norway's largest combined zoo and amusement park, often described as one of the country's most visited attractions. For Norwegian children its heart is Kardemomme by (Cardamom Town), the life-size village from Thorbjorn Egner's much-loved story of three bumbling robbers, a kind policeman and a town tower, and Captain Sabertooth's pirate world, built around Terje Formoe's pirate character, with a big evening show in summer. Around these are Nordic wilderness areas with wolves, lynx and moose, an African section, smaller animals, playgrounds, the outdoor Badelandet water park in summer, and hotels and cabins on site. People come for a full family day or two in the south's sunny summer. The honest caveats: it is built for Norwegian families with young children, most shows and characters speak Norwegian, peak summer is crowded and expensive, and it is not a thrill-ride park.

Open all year, but in very different modes. In the main season, roughly mid June to mid August, it opens daily with long hours (often about 10:00 to 18:00 or 19:00) and nearly everything running; in spring, autumn and school holidays it opens with parts closed, and in winter mostly the zoo areas - confirm dates. The Sabertooth evening show needs a separate ticket. Buses from Kristiansand take roughly 20-30 minutes; drivers use the E18 and pay for parking. Buy tickets online ahead, since prices vary by date.
