Highway 395 up the back of the Sierra Nevada, with the range rising ten thousand feet out of the Owens Valley on your left for two hundred miles. It links Mount Whitney, Manzanar, Alabama Hills, the bristlecones, Mammoth, Mono Lake and Bodie on a single road, and in October the aspen canyons off it turn gold.
