Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve
Historic District · Coupeville, Washington
The first national historical reserve in the United States, created in 1978 to preserve an entire working rural landscape rather than a single building - roughly 17,500 acres of Whidbey Island covering farms still under the plough by descendants of the families who claimed them in the 1850s, the Victorian town of Coupeville, and the prairie above Ebey Landing. It remains a place where people live and farm, which is the whole point of the designation and the reason it looks unlike any other unit of the park system.
162 Cemetery Road, Coupeville, Washington, 98239, United States
The reserve is a working landscape rather than a gated site - trails, bluffs, beaches and roads are open at all hours, year round, and free. Individual buildings, the Coupeville town businesses and Fort Casey State Park keep their own hours. There is no single visitor centre; the Reserve office is in Coupeville.
