Edith Farnsworth House
Modern Architecture · Plano, Illinois
A single glass-walled room raised on white steel columns above the Fox River flood plain at Plano, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and finished in 1951 for Dr. Edith Farnsworth, a Chicago physician. It is one of the most influential houses of the twentieth century and it produced one of its most famous lawsuits — client and architect ended in court over the cost. The National Trust renamed it from Farnsworth House to credit the woman who commissioned it.
