A Maya City With A Five Storey Stepped Temple Of The Five Floors Rising Above A Huge Plaza, And A System Of Canals And Reservoirs Built As Water Works From About 400 BC. Quiet And Shaded Compared With The Big Yucatan Sites, A Half Day From Campeche City. · San Francisco de Campeche, Campeche

Edzna is a Maya city in Campeche state, about 55 km south-east of Campeche city, and one of the best sites in the region for people who dislike crowds. Its showpiece is the Temple of the Five Floors, a stepped pyramid with five levels of rooms and a stair that climbs to a small temple on top. The Great Acropolis, a huge plaza and ball court, and a system of canals and reservoirs show how the Maya managed water here from about 400 BC. The site is much quieter and shadier than Chichen Itza or Uxmal, with trees and lawns between the buildings, and a visit takes two to three hours. Guides wait at the entrance and add a lot of detail. It suits history lovers, photographers and families who want a calm morning. It is worth a half-day from Campeche, particularly if you plan to see Calakmul or the Rio Bec sites later. It is hot and has mosquitoes, so go early. Skip it if you only want a famous name.
