Egeskov Castle

Renaissance Water Castle Completed In 1554, Standing In A Moat On Oak Piles, With Large Gardens, Mazes, A Treetop Walk And Vintage Vehicle Museums · Kvaerndrup, Region of Southern Denmark

Egeskov Castle, near the village of Kvaerndrup in south Funen, is the picture most people have in mind when they think of a Danish fairy-tale castle: a red-brick Renaissance water castle with twin towers and spires, rising straight out of a moat. It was completed in 1554, in a century of civil unrest when a noble house needed to be defensible, and it is said to stand on a foundation of oak piles driven into the lake bed - the name itself means oak forest. It is still a family home, and only part of the castle is open, but around it the owners have built one of Denmark's biggest day-out estates: formal gardens, hedge and bamboo mazes, a treetop walk, playgrounds, and large museums of vintage cars, motorcycles, aircraft, carriages and emergency vehicles, plus Titania's Palace, a famous giant doll's house. Families can easily fill a whole day. The honest caveat: Egeskov is seasonal, roughly spring to autumn, and closed to ordinary visits for much of the winter; the ticket is not cheap; and on summer weekends the grounds feel more like a theme park than a quiet historic house.

Egeskov Castle, Egeskov Gade, Kvaerndrup, south Funen, Kvaerndrup, Region of Southern Denmark, Denmark

Egeskov is seasonal: it usually opens in roughly April or May and closes in the autumn (often around the October school holiday), with the longest hours in July and early August and shorter days in spring and September - confirm the exact season each year, as dates shift. The castle interior can keep shorter hours than the grounds, and there are occasional special winter or Christmas openings. It is about 30 km south of Odense on the road to Svendborg: roughly 30 minutes by car, or a regional train from Odense towards Svendborg to Kvaerndrup station, then roughly 2 km on foot or by local bus. Nothing must be booked for a normal visit, but buying online can be cheaper or faster in peak weeks; concerts and festivals are ticketed separately.
