Egmont Key State Park

Florida State Park · St. Petersburg, Florida

An island in the mouth of Tampa Bay holding a working lighthouse from 1858, the concrete ruins of Fort Dade, and no residents at all. It served as a camp for captured Seminoles, a Union navy base and then an artillery post, and the sea is now taking it back — several of the fort's gun batteries stand in the surf and the island is measurably shrinking.

Mouth of Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg, Florida, 33711, United States

Open 8:00 a.m. until sundown, 365 days a year. Accessible by private boat or licensed ferry only. Parts of the island close seasonally for bird nesting.
