El Capitan State Beach
State Park · Goleta, California
El Capitan State Beach is on the Gaviota coast of Santa Barbara County, roughly 20 miles west of Santa Barbara along Highway 101. It is a rocky, cobbled shoreline with tide pools, a sandy stretch at the creek mouth, and a campground on the bluff that is among the most sought-after on the southern California coast. Surfers come for the point breaks in winter swell, families come to camp and play in the shallows, and a paved bike path along the bluff links it with Refugio State Beach - confirm length and condition. Do not confuse it with El Capitan, the granite cliff in Yosemite; this is a beach, nowhere near the Sierra. Expect cold Pacific water, steady Highway 101 noise and a railroad track close to the park, with trains passing through the day and night. Sunsets are the main show. Weekend campsites in summer book out far ahead, and a day visit is easier on a weekday. Confirm fees, tide and campground details before you go.

State Parks has generally kept day use open from morning until around sunset, with a staffed entrance kiosk during the busy season and shorter or unstaffed periods in winter - confirm the current times with California State Parks before driving out. The campground runs on its own check-in and check-out times, usually afternoon arrival and late-morning departure, and reservations are made in advance through the state system. The beach itself is tidal: at high tide the sand and cobble can shrink to a narrow strip and the tide pools are covered, while a low or minus tide opens the rocky shelf for exploring. Check a tide table for the morning of your visit. Storms, high surf or bluff damage can close the beach, the bike path or parts of the campground at short notice, so look for alerts on the State Parks page the day before.
