El Cielo Biosphere Reserve
Reserva De La Biosfera / Programa MAB (UNESCO) · Gómez Farías, Tamaulipas
A mountain reserve in southern Tamaulipas where, within about 1,500 metres of altitude, four ecosystems are stacked on top of each other: tropical forest at the bottom, then cloud forest, then pine and oak, then dry scrub on the far side. It is the northernmost cloud forest in Mexico and a known destination for birders, with hundreds of species including many at the edge of their range. A biosphere reserve since the 1980s, it holds jaguars, ocelots and black bears, though they are rarely seen. The village of Gomez Farias is the base, with community-run lodging and guides; rough tracks climb to Alta Cima and San Jose and need a 4x4 and a local driver. Tamaulipas carries high travel advice levels for highway crime and organised violence, so check current state travel advice before planning, use established local guides or birding operators, and drive only by day. Trails are slick, signal is patchy and there are no ATMs. November to April is best.
