El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park

Fort · Santa Barbara, California

The last military outpost Spain built in the New World, founded in 1782, sitting in the middle of downtown Santa Barbara. El Cuartel, the soldiers' quarters, is the second-oldest surviving building in California. Much of the rest is careful reconstruction on original foundations, and the archaeology is still going on around it.
