Elephant Rocks State Park
Rock Formation · Belleview, Missouri
A field of pink Precambrian granite boulders in the St. Francois Mountains, weathered out of a 1.4-billion-year-old batholith and left standing end to end like a train of circus elephants - which is where the name comes from. The land was donated to the state in 1967 by a geologist who wanted it protected. The park is small and its one-mile paved Braille Trail was among the first trails in the United States designed for visually impaired visitors, which is the other reason it matters.
7406 Highway 21, Belleview, Missouri, 63623, United States
FREE and open daily, generally dawn to dusk, year round. There is no visitor centre and no staff on site most of the time. THE PARK CAN CLOSE IN ICE, because the granite becomes genuinely lethal when frozen. There is no camping. The Braille Trail is open whenever the park is.
