Elephant Trunk Hill and Seven Star Park (Guilin)

The Emblem Hill Of Guilin And The City Largest Park, In The Guilin Karst Landscape · Guilin, Guangxi

The karst hills that rise inside Guilin itself, giving the city a skyline of limestone towers in the middle of its streets and rivers. The most famous is Elephant Trunk Hill, a grey crag at the meeting of the Li and Peach Blossom rivers whose natural arch, worn through by the water, makes the rock look exactly like an elephant dipping its trunk to drink; the gap between trunk and body is called the Water Moon Cave, because on a still night the moon appears to float both in the arch and on the water beneath. A small Ming-dynasty pagoda shaped like a sword handle stands on the summit, and the hill has become the emblem of Guilin, printed on everything from bus tickets to beer bottles. Across the river lies Seven Star Park, the city's largest, named for seven peaks arranged like the stars of the Big Dipper: inside are the vast Seven Star Cave with its floodlit chambers, Camel Hill, a forest of carved stone stelae recording a thousand years of visitors' poems, the Song-dynasty Flower Bridge and a small zoo with giant pandas. Both parks are gentle, green and easy, a calm half-day between longer trips on the Li River.
