Elk Knob State Park

Subnational Park · Todd, North Carolina

One of North Carolina's newest state parks, opened in 2003 around Elk Knob - a 5,520-foot amphibolite peak in Watauga County, north of Boone. Amphibolite is a base-rich rock rather than the acidic granite of most Southern Appalachian summits, and it supports a northern hardwood forest and a plant community found in very few other places. The summit trail was purpose-built and is one of the best-graded climbs in the state.
