Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration

History Museum · New York, New York

The federal immigration station that processed roughly twelve million arrivals between 1892 and 1954, restored and opened as a museum in 1990 in the original Main Building. Around forty percent of Americans have an ancestor who came through this room. The rest of the island — a thirty-building hospital complex where the sick were held — stands abandoned and is only enterable on a separate hard-hat tour.

Ellis Island, New York, New York, United States

Open daily except December 25, on the ferry schedule — roughly 9 a.m. to late afternoon with seasonal variation. THE MUSEUM IS FREE; THE FERRY IS NOT. ⚠ A 2 p.m. or later ferry will not leave time for this island. Hours and the current status of the hard hat tour were NOT verified for this file.
