Emerald Mound
National Historic Landmark · Natchez, Mississippi
A flat-topped ceremonial mound of about eight acres at the base and thirty-five feet high, built by ancestors of the Natchez people between roughly 1250 and 1600 by shaping a natural hill and adding to it — the second-largest Mississippian mound in the United States after Monks Mound at Cahokia. Two smaller mounds stand on the platform on top. It was abandoned before the French arrived, and the people who built it moved to the Grand Village a few miles away. It sits at milepost 10.3 of the Natchez Trace Parkway and it is free to climb.
