Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument

National Monument · Sumner, Mississippi

A national monument proclaimed in July 2023 across three sites, two of them in the Mississippi Delta. Graball Landing on the Tallahatchie is where the body of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till was pulled from the river in August 1955; the Tallahatchie County courthouse at Sumner is where the two men who killed him were acquitted by an all-white jury in about an hour, and where they confessed to a magazine months later knowing they could not be tried again. The third site is the Chicago church where his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, insisted on an open casket so that the world would see what had been done.
