Empire State Plaza

Modern Architecture · Albany, New York

Nelson Rockefeller's ninety-eight-acre government complex in Albany, begun 1965 and finished in 1976 — a marble platform carrying four identical towers, a curved concert hall universally called THE EGG, and a reflecting pool, built by demolishing forty blocks and displacing several thousand people. It is either the most ambitious piece of civic modernism in America or a monument to one man's ego, and both readings are widely held.

The plaza is open and FREE. ⚠ THE CONCOURSE, THE ART COLLECTION AND THE FREE CORNING TOWER OBSERVATION DECK KEEP GOVERNMENT-BUILDING HOURS — largely weekdays, with security screening and PHOTO ID REQUIRED FOR THE TOWER, and reduced or no access to some parts at weekends.
