The remains of a Shaker village on the western shore of Mascoma Lake in Enfield, in the upper Connecticut River valley of New Hampshire, where members of the celibate Shaker faith lived and farmed communally from the late 18th century until the early 20th (confirm dates). Its centerpiece is the Great Stone Dwelling, a six-storey granite building finished around 1841 (confirm) and often described as the largest dwelling the Shakers ever built. After the Shakers left, a Catholic missionary order used the village as a seminary for decades before the museum was formed in the 1980s (confirm). Today visitors walk through the stone dwelling's long halls, built-in cupboards and meeting room, see exhibits on Shaker life, crafts and inventions, wander herb and flower gardens and follow a trail up the hill to the old Feast Ground. The museum also offers rooms for overnight stays and Shaker-style dinners on some dates (confirm). It is smaller and quieter than its larger sister site, Canterbury Shaker Village, near Concord.
