Ephesus Museum in Selcuk
The Museum That Holds The Finds From Ephesus, Including The Two Statues Of Artemis With Many Breasts, Frescoes And Mosaics From The Terrace Houses, Coins, And Roman And Byzantine Objects. A Good Indoor Companion To The Ruins, With A Small Garden And A Shady Cafe · Selcuk, Izmir
The Ephesus Museum stands in the town of Selcuk, about 3 km from the ruins of ancient Ephesus on the Aegean plain of Izmir province, and it holds the best movable finds from the city and from the nearby sanctuary of Artemis (confirm). Its famous pieces are the two statues of Artemis with many breasts, the Beautiful Artemis and the Great Artemis, found in the Prytaneion of Ephesus. The halls also show frescoes and mosaics from the Terrace Houses, the marble Eros on a dolphin, the cheeky Priapus fountain figure, gladiator reliefs, coins, jewellery, glass and Roman and Byzantine objects, and a garden court holds altars and column drums. Most travellers see the museum before or after the open-air ruins, because the labels explain what the site no longer shows, and the cool halls are a relief in the midday heat. Selcuk is small and walkable, with the Basilica of St John on the hill behind. Allow about two hours, and confirm the hours and price before you go.

The museum is a ticketed state museum, normally open daily except one closed weekday (confirm), with longer hours from spring to autumn (roughly 08:30 to 18:30 or 19:00) and shorter winter hours, and the last entry comes about 30 to 45 minutes before closing. The shop, the cafe and the garden court may keep their own times. Coach groups from the cruise ports reach the museum around midday, so the first hour after opening is the calmest. Public holidays and religious festivals can change the schedule. Confirm the days and times at the desk or with the museum directorate on the day you plan to go.
