Erzgebirge Mining Region

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Erzgebirge / Krusnohori Mining Region (2019), Shared With Czechia; Eight Hundred Years Of Silver, Tin And Uranium Mining Across A Landscape Of Show Mines, Miners' Churches And Wooden Toy And Lace Towns · Annaberg-Buchholz, Saxony

The Erzgebirge, the Ore Mountains along the Czech border, became World Heritage in 2019 for eight centuries of mining: silver from the 1160s that paid for Saxony and built its towns, then tin, iron, cobalt for blue pigment, and from 1946 uranium dug for the Soviet Union by the Wismut company. The inscription is not one site but around twenty component areas shared with Czechia, so this is a region you drive rather than a place you visit. What you actually do: go underground in a show mine at Freiberg, Annaberg or Poehla, where it is about 8 to 10 degrees whatever the season; look at the mining altarpieces and the Tulip Pulpit in churches the silver paid for; and in the villages see the wooden toys, Christmas pyramids and Schwibbogen candle arches the region invented once the ore ran thin. December is its season, with miners' parades and markets in every town. It is high, cold, strongly dialect-speaking, and a car helps enormously.

Show mines run to fixed tour times rather than open hours, typically a handful of departures a day with more in summer and in Advent, and most close one or two weekdays out of season; some shut for weeks in late winter. Churches are open to look round outside service times, with guided visits at set hours. Museums in Freiberg, Annaberg and Seiffen keep normal museum days and many close Mondays. The cable car and the narrow-gauge railway run to a published seasonal timetable with maintenance breaks. Craft workshops keep shop hours and close Sundays. Confirm every time and price before you drive, because this is a scattered region of small operators.
