Esrum Abbey and Gribskov

The Surviving Wing Of A Great Medieval Cistercian Abbey, Now A Museum With A Water Mill And Gardens, Beside Gribskov, One Of Denmark'S Largest Forests · Esrum, Capital Region of Denmark

Esrum Abbey stands at the north end of Lake Esrum in north Zealand, roughly 50 km north of Copenhagen between Hillerod and Helsingor. Cistercian monks from Clairvaux settled here in the 1150s, and Esrum grew into one of the richest monasteries in medieval Denmark, owning farms, mills and forest across the region. After the Reformation of 1536 the abbey was closed and most of it pulled down; its bricks are said to have gone into royal buildings such as Kronborg and Frederiksborg. One long brick wing survived, used over the centuries as a royal stud, barracks and other offices, and since the 1990s it has been a museum about monastic life, with a monastery garden and, next door, Mollegaarden, an old farm with a restored water mill. Behind it lies Gribskov, one of Denmark's largest forests and part of the UNESCO par force hunting landscape of North Zealand, with star-shaped royal hunting roads. The honest caveat: only one wing remains, parts of the site keep seasonal hours, and it suits a slow half day more than a big sightseeing stop.
