Silver Lead Smelting Town On US 50, With The Restored Eureka Opera House (1880) And The Eureka County Courthouse · Eureka, Nevada

Eureka is a small mining town on US 50 in central Nevada, roughly 70 miles east of Austin and 77 miles west of Ely, and it is one of the best-kept historic Main Streets on the Loneliest Road, which the town bills itself as the friendliest stop on. Silver was found here in 1864, and in the 1870s the district became a major smelting centre for silver-lead ores, with furnaces whose smoke is said to have earned the town the nickname the Pittsburgh of the West. The boom faded by the end of the century, but the town kept its 19th-century core. The restored Eureka Opera House of 1880 is used again for concerts, meetings and events; the Eureka County Courthouse of 1879-80 is still a working courthouse with a handsome old courtroom; and the Eureka Sentinel Museum keeps the old newspaper office and its presses. The Jackson House hotel and a row of brick and stone storefronts complete a walk of an hour or two. It is a local place, not a resort, with limited fuel, food and motels, high passes on both sides and real winter snow at about 6,500 feet.

Main Street (US 50), Eureka, Nevada, 89316, United States

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: Main Street and the outside of every historic building can be seen at any hour, free. The courthouse is open on weekday office hours and closed at weekends and on holidays, and the courtroom may be seen only when staff allow. The Sentinel Museum usually keeps limited daytime hours, often fewer days in winter; check. The Opera House opens for events and sometimes by arrangement. Cafes keep short, owner-set hours. The traps that ruin a day are arriving at the weekend expecting the courthouse, arriving after kitchens close, finding rooms full of mine crews midweek, and crossing a snowy pass after dark in winter. Confirm current times before relying on them.
