Everest Base Camp (Tibet North Side)

Qomolangma National Nature Reserve · Tingri, Tibet

The only place on earth where you can ride to a clear, head-on view of Mount Everest's north face: the Rongbuk valley in Tibet's Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, where Rongbuk Monastery sits at nearly 5,000 m with the 8,849-metre summit filling the head of the valley. The journey from Lhasa crosses high passes with panoramas of several 8,000-metre peaks. Tourists travel only on agency tours with Tibet permits and view the mountain from the Rongbuk area; the climbers' base camp beyond is closed to them. At sunset and dawn the summit pyramid glows gold above the monastery chortens, and the night sky is among the clearest anywhere.
