F.J. McLain State Park

Michigan State Park · Hancock, Michigan

F.J. McLain State Park lies on the Lake Superior shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Houghton County, a few miles from Hancock, Houghton and the old copper towns around Calumet. It is a mid-sized park with a sand and cobble beach, a campground near the water and some of the best sunsets in the state, with the open lake to the north and west. The water is cold all year and waves can be strong, so swimming is for the brave and the shore is for walking, sitting and watching storms. Winters are heavy with snow, often well over 200 inches in a season (confirm), and early summer brings black flies and mosquitoes. The park suits campers, sunset watchers and visitors based in the Houghton area. Allow two to four hours for a visit or a night or two to camp. A Recreation Passport is needed for each vehicle. Bring warm layers in every season, because the lake keeps the shore cool and the wind rises after sunset, and confirm cabin and campground details.

Michigan state parks are commonly open daily from about 8 AM to 10 PM for day use, and F.J. McLain is generally treated as open year-round for day visitors, but heavy snow can close roads and parking and the Keweenaw is plowed to a different schedule than the Lower Peninsula, so confirm with the Michigan DNR in winter. The campground is seasonal, typically from late spring or early summer into early autumn, and the busiest weeks are July and August, so confirm opening dates and the booking window. A Recreation Passport is needed. Cabin and mini-cabin rentals, if offered, have their own booking rules - confirm availability and whether they are open off-season.
