Fairhaven Historic District
Heritage District · Bellingham, Washington
A compact district of red-brick Victorian commercial buildings at the south end of Bellingham, founded as its own boom town in 1883 by Dan Harris on the expectation that the transcontinental railway would terminate here. It did not, the boom collapsed, and the buildings survived precisely because nobody had money to replace them. It became part of Bellingham in 1903 and is now four or five blocks of independent shops, a well-known bookshop, restaurants and a green, with the Alaska ferry leaving from the bottom of the hill.
12th Street and Harris Avenue, Bellingham, Washington, 98225, United States
A working neighbourhood, open at all hours. Shops generally 10 AM to 6 PM, restaurants and bars later. The Saturday farmers market runs in the warmer months. The Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal at the bottom of the hill operates to its own schedule, and the district fills whenever a sailing is loading.
