Fano and Sonderho
Wadden Sea Island A Short Ferry Ride From Esbjerg, With A Wide Drivable North Sea Beach, Kite Festivals, And The Thatched Skipper Village Of Sonderho · Nordby, Region of Southern Denmark
Fano is the northernmost of Denmark's Wadden Sea islands, a low sandy island roughly 16 km long that lies just across a narrow channel from the port city of Esbjerg, reached by a ferry that takes roughly 12 minutes. Its west side is one long, wide North Sea beach of pale, hard-packed sand, so broad and firm that cars are allowed to drive on marked stretches of it, and in the early 1900s it even hosted motor races. Behind the beach lie dunes, heath and pine plantations; on the sheltered east side are the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea, protected as a national park and part of the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea. At either end sit two old seafaring villages: Nordby, where the ferry lands, and Sonderho in the south, a cluster of low thatched skipper houses in narrow lanes that is often called one of the prettiest villages in Denmark. People come for beach days, cycling, kite festivals, birds and quiet. The honest caveat: it is windy and cool even in summer, the sea is cold with strong currents, and July is busy with holiday-home guests.
