Faro
A Former Mining Town Built In 1969 Beside The Faro Lead And Zinc Mine, Once The Yukon'S Biggest, With A Fannin Sheep Viewing Area Where Dall Sheep Come Down To A Salt Lick In Summer, A Boardwalk Arboretum And A Campground. A Quiet Roadside Stop On The Campbell Highway With Few Services · Faro, Yukon
Faro is a small Yukon town on the Campbell Highway, about 355 km north-east of Whitehorse. It was built in 1969 beside the Faro lead and zinc mine, once the largest open-pit mine in the territory, and its streets and houses still show the planned look of a company town. The mine has been closed for decades and the population is now small, but visitors come for something the mine did not plan. The Fannin Sheep Viewing Area just outside town is a place where Dall sheep often come down to a mineral lick in summer, and the Faro Arboretum has a boardwalk through local trees and plants. A campground gives a simple base. The Campbell Highway is partly gravel, so the drive is slow and tyres matter. Services are few: fuel, a small store and limited lodging, and hours are short. Mosquitoes are heavy in early summer. The old mine site and tailings are fenced for safety, so look from the road. Confirm sheep season, staffing and campground dates before you go.
Faro, a Yukon town on the Campbell Highway about 355 km north-east of Whitehorse, with a viewing area for Fannin sheep and a small arboretum; coordinates approximate, Faro, Yukon, Canada
The town is open all year as a small community, but visitor services are seasonal and thin. The sheep viewing area and the arboretum boardwalk are outdoor places that can be visited in daylight in summer, though any staffed hours or interpretive sign-up should be confirmed. The campground, store, fuel and cafe or lodge hours change by year and may shut outside the summer months. Winter roads are cold, dark and snowy, and many things close. Looking at the town, the scenery and the sheep from the roadside cost nothing. Plan fuel and food ahead, since the next large town is a long drive away, and phone ahead to confirm what is open on your day.
