Farragut State Park

Subnational Park · Athol, Idaho

Four thousand acres on the southern tip of Lake Pend Oreille, five miles east of Athol, on ground that spent thirty months of the Second World War as the Farragut Naval Training Station - more than 293,000 sailors did their basic training here, a long way from any ocean, and the last of them finished in March 1945. The base closed in June 1946 and the land became a state park. It went on to host the 1967 World Scout Jamboree, the only one held in the United States until 2019, and two National Scout Jamborees after that.

Open year round with an Idaho state park vehicle entry fee; an annual passport is available. ⚠ SERVICES ARE SEASONAL EVEN THOUGH THE PARK IS NOT: the swimming beach, the full campground season and THE MUSEUM AT THE BRIG run roughly late spring to early autumn, and winter brings reduced services with the park used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Camping and cabins are reserved through the Idaho state park reservation service and SUMMER WEEKENDS BOOK MONTHS AHEAD. Dogs are welcome on a lead throughout except on the swimming beach in season. Firewood must be bought locally under Idaho quarantine rules.
