Federal Hill
Nightlife District · Providence, Rhode Island
The neighbourhood immediately west of downtown Providence, across the interstate, and the traditional centre of the city's Italian-American community since the late nineteenth century. Atwells Avenue is its spine, with over twenty restaurants inside a quarter-mile and a gateway arch carrying La Pigna, a pine cone that is a traditional Italian symbol of welcome and abundance — which locals cheerfully and wrongly call the pineapple. DePasquale Square, halfway along, is the outdoor room the neighbourhood is built around.
265 Atwells Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island, 02903, United States
A public neighbourhood, free and open at all times — but ⚠ IT IS AN EVENING DISTRICT AND COMES ALIVE FROM ABOUT SIX ONWARD. Before then Atwells Avenue is a quiet residential street with most shutters down, and arriving at lunchtime is the most common disappointment here. Restaurants open for dinner service; some do lunch and many do not. The markets, salumerie and bakeries are the exception and are best in the morning. Weekend evenings are busiest and want a reservation. ⚠ PARKING IS THE PRACTICAL PROBLEM — street parking is tight and largely permit or metered, the small paid lots fill on weekend evenings, and parking downtown and walking about fifteen minutes is often the better plan.
