First Americans Museum
Museum Of The 39 Tribal Nations Of Oklahoma; Opened September 2021 · Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
A 175,000-square-foot museum on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City telling the story of the 39 distinct tribal nations now in Oklahoma, most of them removed here from homelands across the country. The building is an act of architecture in itself: a 90-foot earthen mound wraps the site in a spiral, aligned so that the sun rises through the Hall of the People's glass wall at the winter solstice, and the circular hall echoes the shape of a ceremonial arbour. Galleries built with tribal advisers cover origin stories, removal, allotment and the modern nations, with objects on long-term loan from the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. The Thirty Nine Restaurant serves food drawn from Native ingredients, the FAMshop sells work by Native artists, and outdoor performances run on the mound and in the amphitheatre. It opened in September 2021 after decades of stalled funding.
