First Avenue
Music Venue · Minneapolis, Minnesota
A black-painted 1937 Greyhound bus depot in downtown Minneapolis that became a nightclub in 1970 and has been the centre of the city's music since. Prince made it famous — much of Purple Rain was shot inside and a 1983 benefit show here produced the live recordings that became the record — but its claim is longer than that: it is a working independent venue that has hosted almost everyone, and the roughly five hundred silver stars painted on its exterior each name an act that played there. Prince's is gold.
701 First Avenue North, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55403, United States
Event nights only — there is no daytime access and there are no public tours. Shows run most nights of the year across the Mainroom and the smaller 7th St Entry; doors are typically two hours before the headline act. Most shows are 18+ or 21+. Tickets are cheapest bought directly from the venue. The star wall on the exterior is on a public pavement and can be seen free at any hour.
