First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park

Archaeological · Ulm, Montana

A sandstone cliff running about a mile along the edge of a bench above the Missouri south of Great Falls, used by Plains peoples for at least a thousand years to drive bison over the edge — the largest bison cliff jump known in North America. Below the drop the bone bed is metres deep in places. It takes a great deal of coordinated knowledge to move a herd across open country to a specific cliff, and the interpretation here, built with tribal input, is about that skill rather than about the fall.

342 Ulm Vaughn Road, Ulm, Montana, 59485, United States

Open year round on a Montana state park vehicle fee, generally sunrise to sunset for the grounds. THE VISITOR CENTRE KEEPS SHORTER AND SEASONAL HOURS and is reduced or closed in winter — time the visit to when it is open, because the interpretation is what makes the site legible. Interpretive programmes run in summer. There is no shade and no water beyond the visitor centre.
