Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site

Tongass National Forest Wildlife Viewing Site · Hyder, Alaska

A boardwalk and viewing platform in Tongass National Forest beside Fish Creek, about 4 miles north of the tiny town of Hyder at the end of the Portland Canal, where brown and black bears fish for chum and pink salmon in shallow, clear water often just below the rails. It is one of the most accessible places in Alaska to watch bears from a road-reached site, and Forest Service staff are on duty in season to explain bear behaviour and enforce rules. Hyder is reached by road only through Stewart, British Columbia, so visitors cross into Canada and need a passport to return. Tickets must be reserved on Recreation.gov for visits from 15 July to 20 September, as 1-day, 3-day, 7-day or season passes. Because of flood damage, capacity was limited to 150 tickets a day. The site opens about 6:30 AM-9:30 PM Pacific time in daylight.
