Five Civilized Tribes Museum

Museum Of The Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek And Seminole Nations In The 1875 Union Indian Agency Building · Muskogee, Oklahoma

A museum of the art and history of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole nations, in the 1875 Union Indian Agency building on the hill beside Honor Heights Park in Muskogee, the stone house from which the federal government dealt with all five nations after removal. It opened as a museum in 1966 and holds paintings, sculpture, basketry, beadwork and archival material, with a long-running series of competitive art shows that helped establish several generations of Native artists in Oklahoma. The building itself is the oldest structure of its kind in the state, listed on the National Register, and the galleries stay deliberately modest: this is a working collection of the five nations' own artists rather than a spectacle. Muskogee's azalea park is a short walk away.
