Five Islands Provincial Park

A Park On The Minas Basin With Huge Fundy Tides, Red Cliffs, A Campground, A Picnic Area And The Five Islands Of Legend. A Good Spot To See The Bay Of Fundy'S Tide Shift, With Clam Digging And Views Over The Water · Five Islands, Nova Scotia

Five Islands Provincial Park sits on the north shore of the Minas Basin, where Cobequid Bay narrows toward the head of the Bay of Fundy in Colchester County, Nova Scotia, about 50 km west of Truro on Route 2 (confirm the distance). The tides here are among the highest in the world, with a range often above 10 metres, so the scene changes completely twice a day: at high water the sea fills the bay, and at low water red mudflats stretch out toward five wooded islands. In Mikmaw tradition the hero Glooscap hurled clods of earth at a beaver and made the islands (confirm the names). Red sandstone cliffs, a hilltop campground, picnic grounds and forest trails make this a classic Fundy stop. It is a small, seasonal park, busiest on July and August weekends, with clam digging, bird watching and long evening light drawing visitors who plan around the tide table. Park staff and signs post tide times, and the shore is open to walkers.

The park is open for day use through the main summer season, commonly from about mid May to early October, with the campground, washrooms and picnic facilities staffed on a seasonal calendar, so confirm opening dates with Nova Scotia Provincial Parks before driving out. Outside the season the gate may be closed and services shut, though the shore is reachable on foot. The sea, not the clock, sets the best viewing times: check the tide table for high and low water on the day, since the flats are only walkable for a few hours around low tide. Summer daylight lasts until well after 8 pm, and the evening shore is often the quietest.
