Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area
National Recreation Area · Dutch John, Utah
A 91-mile reservoir on the Green River in red sandstone canyon country, straddling the Utah-Wyoming line and administered by the Forest Service through Ashley National Forest. John Wesley Powell named the gorge in 1869 on his expedition down the river, for the way the cliffs burn in low sun. The dam went in in 1964 and Congress made the area a National Recreation Area on 1 October 1968. It is boating, fishing, camping and rafting country, and the tailwater below the dam is one of the better trout fisheries in the American West.
Flaming Gorge Dam, Dutch John, Utah, United States
Open year round, though ⚠ WINTER IS SEVERE AND MOST SERVICES CLOSE. Administered by the US Forest Service through Ashley National Forest. A day-use or amenity fee applies at developed sites and the America the Beautiful pass is accepted; camping is reserved through recreation.gov and fills for summer weekends. ⚠ THE RECREATION AREA STRADDLES THE UTAH-WYOMING LINE AND FISHING LICENCES ARE SEPARATE BY STATE — a Utah licence does not cover Wyoming water and reciprocity rules are specific, so check with the relevant wildlife agency before fishing. ⚠ IT IS REMOTE: Dutch John is very small, distances around a 91-mile reservoir are far longer than the map suggests, and fuel and services are widely spaced — supply up before committing to the far shore. Wind rises quickly on the open water; treat it as a large lake. The tailwater below the dam is cold year round.
