Flamingo Las Vegas

Casino Resort Opened In 1946 With Backing From Bugsy Siegel'S Syndicate; The Oldest Resort On The Strip Still Operating; Home Of The Free Flamingo Wildlife Habitat · Las Vegas, Nevada

The Flamingo is a pink-neon casino resort in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip, across from Caesars Palace, and it carries the most famous origin story on the boulevard. It opened in December 1946 with money from an organised-crime syndicate and with Benjamin 'Bugsy' Siegel driving the project; the opening went badly, costs ran wildly over budget, and in June 1947 Siegel was shot dead in Beverly Hills. The Flamingo is often described as the oldest resort on the Strip still operating, though none of the 1946 building survives; the original was demolished decades ago and the towers are later additions. What makes it worth a stop today is free: the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat, a garden of Chilean flamingos, pelicans, koi and turtles in the middle of the resort, with a small Siegel memorial plaque near the garden chapel. Beyond that it is a mid-priced Caesars Entertainment resort with a large pool, smaller shows and a location next to the LINQ Promenade and the High Roller. Expect resort fees, paid parking and smoke.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the casino, lobby and some bars are open 24 hours every day; the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is usually open daily from early morning to around dusk, with free scheduled feedings or talks, often morning and early afternoon; restaurants keep breakfast, lunch and dinner hours; the pool runs mid-morning to late afternoon and shrinks in winter, and the adults-only pool party is seasonal; shows have dark days. The traps that ruin a day are visiting the habitat on a July afternoon when the birds hide in the shade, missing the feeding times, looking for a monorail stop at the Strip door, finding the pool party closed out of season, and booking on the base room rate without the resort fee. Confirm current times before relying on them.
