Flint Hills National Scenic Byway

National Scenic Byway · Council Grove, Kansas

Forty-seven miles of KS-177 between Council Grove and Cassoday, running the length of the Flint Hills — the only substantial tallgrass prairie left in North America, and the reason it survives is that the limestone under the grass was too shallow to plough, so the land could only ever be grazed. The road passes Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, drops through Cottonwood Falls with its French Renaissance courthouse, and otherwise crosses an emptiness that is the point rather than the price.

KS Highway 177, Council Grove, Kansas, 66846, United States

A public state highway, open at all hours and all year, free. Individual stops along it — Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, the Chase County Courthouse, the Council Grove sites — keep their own hours. Prescribed burning across the Flint Hills in April produces smoke and reduced visibility at times.
