Fogo Island

Town Of Fogo Island · Fogo Island, Newfoundland and Labrador

Fogo Island lies off the north coast of Newfoundland, reached only by a ferry from Farewell, which the provincial service runs in about 45 minutes (confirm the time and schedule). It is a rocky island of barrens, coves and low headlands, with old outport fishing communities such as Tilting, known for its Irish heritage, and Joe Batt's Arm. In recent years it has also become known for a design-led inn and artist studios that sit on the shore in strikingly modern shapes. Brimstone Head is a short climb above the town of Fogo, and a local joke calls it one of the four corners of the flat earth. In late spring, icebergs can drift past the coast. It suits slow travellers, hikers and photographers who accept limited services, fog, wind and a ferry that can be full or delayed. It is not a swimming island, and the fog can hide the view for a day. Allow at least two days, and reserve or queue early for the ferry in summer.

Main Road, Joe Batt's Arm, Fogo Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, A0G 2X0, Canada

The island is open year round to residents and visitors, but most tourist businesses, cafes, guesthouses and tours run roughly from June to September, with fewer services in shoulder months and very little in deep winter. The ferry from Farewell runs on a schedule that changes by season, takes reservations for vehicles in busy periods, and can be delayed or cancelled by wind, fog or ice, so confirm the schedule and booking rules with the provincial ferry service before you travel. Trails and viewpoints are open to walkers at all hours but are best in daylight. Shops and food stops are small and may close early or on certain days, so plan fuel, food and a spare day.
