Fontainebleau State Park

Subnational Park · Mandeville, Louisiana

Twenty-eight hundred acres on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain at Mandeville, built on the grounds of a sugar plantation whose BRICK SUGAR MILL RUINS STILL STAND IN THE WOODS. It has the best public beach on the lake, a live oak alley, marsh and hardwood trails, and the TAMMANY TRACE — a thirty-one-mile rail-trail — runs straight through it. It is the closest good state park to New Orleans, about forty-five minutes over the Causeway, and it is where the city goes to camp.
