Forbidden City (Palace Museum)

UNESCO World Heritage Site (Imperial Palaces Of The Ming And Qing Dynasties, 1987); Palace Museum; National 5A Tourist Attraction · Beijing, Beijing

The imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, completed in 1420: a 72-hectare walled complex of nearly a thousand buildings on a strict north-south axis in the heart of Beijing, home to 24 emperors over five centuries until the last emperor, Puyi, was expelled in 1924. Ringed by a 10-metre wall and a 52-metre moat, its golden-roofed halls rise from the ceremonial Outer Court to the private Inner Court and the Imperial Garden. Today it is the Palace Museum, holding more than 1.8 million objects - the most-visited palace complex in the world, with roughly 40,000 real-name tickets a day that routinely sell out a week ahead.
