Ford Field

Stadium · Detroit, Michigan

Ford Field is the domed stadium in downtown Detroit where the NFL Detroit Lions have played since 2002, with room for roughly 65,000 people. Its best feature is architectural: the building was wrapped around a six-storey brick Hudson's warehouse from the 1920s, and that old facade forms one whole side of the stadium, with suites and offices behind the original windows. The Lions' Thanksgiving Day home game is the best-known tradition, a national broadcast fixture. The season runs from September into January, and the roof means weather never changes the plan. Concerts, college football and basketball and other big events fill the calendar outside football. It is a stadium, not an attraction: on a day with no event the doors are shut. Plan around a game or show, and read the clear-bag and ticket rules first. Comerica Park and Little Caesars Arena are close by and have their own listings. Tours are occasional at best, so confirm before you count on one.

Ford Field is open to the public on event days only: Lions games, concerts, college and other ticketed events. Gates usually open a couple of hours before kickoff or showtime, and the exact time is printed on the ticket or the event page. There is no regular daily opening for walk-in visitors, and the box office has its own limited hours that change by season. Stadium tours exist from time to time but are not on a fixed daily schedule - confirm with the stadium whether any are running, and whether groups can book. The football season runs roughly September to January, with preseason in August. Check the event calendar for the day, because a concert load-in or a private event can close access even when no ticketed show is on.
