Ford Rouge Factory Tour

Industrial Heritage · Dearborn, Michigan

The Ford Rouge Factory Tour is a visitor tour of the Ford Rouge Complex in Dearborn, the industrial campus Henry Ford built so that raw materials came in at one end and finished cars rolled out at the other. Today the plant builds the F-150 pickup (confirm the current model), and the tour is one of very few in the country that lets the public look down on a working truck line. You watch a short film in the Legacy Theater, see a second presentation in the Manufacturing Innovation Theater, step out onto an observation deck above the living roof, which carries about 10 acres of sedum, and then walk an elevated route over the assembly floor. It suits car people, families with children who can stand still for two hours, and anyone curious about how things are made. It is less rewarding if the line is stopped, so confirm the production schedule first. Allow two to three hours, including the shuttle, and expect security rules.

20900 Oakwood Boulevard, Dearborn, Michigan, 48124, United States

The tour generally runs on a set weekly schedule with daytime departures, and it is closed on some days of the week and on major holidays - confirm the current days and hours before you plan a trip around it. Visitors commonly reach the plant by shuttle bus from the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, so the shuttle timetable sets your real day more than the plant does; the last departure is well before the museum closes. The line itself only runs on production days and shifts, so what you see from the walkway depends on the factory calendar, not on your ticket. Check the Henry Ford website for hours, shuttle times and any plant shutdown weeks, which usually fall in summer.
