Ten acres of rooms, courtyards and passages dug by hand beneath Fresno by Baldassare Forestiere, a Sicilian immigrant who worked at it alone for forty years from 1906 after finding the land he had bought was hardpan. Citrus trees grow underground in his courtyards, reaching up to skylights he cut for them, and some are still fruiting.
