Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park

Alaska State Historical Park; WWII Coastal Defence Site · Kodiak, Alaska

A state park on the cliffs of Miller Point, a few miles north-east of the town of Kodiak, protecting the remains of a World War II coastal defence fort built in the early 1940s to guard the Kodiak naval base against Japanese attack. Concrete gun emplacements, bunkers and trenches lie among mossy Sitka spruce forest and wildflower meadows above surf-pounded cliffs. The Kodiak Military History Museum occupies the fort's Ready Ammunition Bunker. Trails lead to Lake Gertrude, tide pools and viewpoints where gray whales pass in spring and sea otters, puffins and eagles are common. In 2026 the museum opened only a few afternoons a week: 1-4 PM on Saturdays and Sundays in May and September, and Friday to Monday in June to August, for a $5 fee separate from the park's day-use fee.
