Fort Adams State Park
Fort · Newport, Rhode Island
A vast bastioned coastal fortification on the point guarding Newport harbour, built in its present form between 1824 and 1857 and described as the most complex fortification in the Western Hemisphere — rivalled in size in the United States only by Fort Monroe in Virginia and Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. It passed to Rhode Island in 1965 and is now a state park, and since 1981 its grounds have been the home of the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival.

THE STATE PARK GROUNDS ARE FREE and open daily year round — shoreline paths, picnic areas, a small beach, a boat ramp and the bay views cost nothing, with free parking outside event days. ⚠ THE FORT INTERIOR IS A SEPARATE, TICKETED, GUIDED-TOUR-ONLY VISIT run by the Fort Adams Trust, roughly $10-$20 for an adult, and it is SEASONAL — broadly May to September, at set times. Outside that season the park is open and the fort is shut, which catches visitors out every spring and autumn. ⚠ ON NEWPORT JAZZ AND NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL WEEKENDS the entire site is given over to the event, normal visiting stops, parking is charged and controlled, and the point is heavily congested — check the Trust calendar against the festival dates before travelling.
