A French And Later British Star Shaped Fort At The Strategic Neck Between Nova Scotia And New Brunswick, Built In 1751 And Captured In 1755, With A Museum, A View Over The Tantramar Marshes And Exhibits On Mi'Kmaq, Acadians And The British. A Well Preserved Fort And A Vantage Point Over The Marshes · Aulac, New Brunswick

Fort Beausejour sits on a ridge above the Isthmus of Chignecto at Aulac, New Brunswick, close to the Nova Scotia border and about 40 km from Moncton (confirm). The French began the star-shaped fort in 1751 to guard the narrow land link between Acadia and the rest of New France, facing the British Fort Lawrence across the Missaquash River. In June 1755 a force of New England volunteers and British regulars besieged it, and the fort fell within about two weeks. The British renamed it Fort Cumberland, and the surrender opened the way to the expulsion of the Acadians from the surrounding country. Today the earthworks, a ruined casemate and a museum tell the story, with exhibits on the Mikmaq, the Acadians and the British soldiers (confirm). From the ramparts the view runs across the Tantramar Marshes, a wide plain of salt marsh and hay fields. Admission is charged in season (confirm). Allow about two hours.
